Shining light on Pilates truths, honoringĀ Joseph Pilates,

and supporting you in your Pilates journey.Ā

Ā  Ā  Ā Ā What Is the Secret to Pilatesā€™ Effectiveness?

Many newcomers to Pilates are drawn to the impressive-looking apparatus, believing that the equipment is essential for a good workout. The Reformers, with their springs and straps, often seem more appealing than simple floor exercises.

But what happens when you can't make it to your private session, or the group class you planned on taking? Will you skip your Pilates practice altogether that day, that week?

Relying solely on equipment may not be the smartest approach. After all, you are investing time and money in your practiceā€”shouldn't you be able to continue it anywhere, anytime, without depending on the apparatus, or availability of the teacher?

Yes, you should!

Perhaps it will ease your mind if you know that Joseph Pilates created his Mat routine first.

Just because there is no equipment involved it doesn't make the exercises less effective. Quite the opposite is true. And if you have done Mat Pilates before, you know that it is actually more difficult because gravity provides a challenge, and not support.

I use the first six Mat exercises to assess a new client before I put them on the equipment. I want to know about their stamina, coordination, body/mind connection and flexibility before they get distracted by the ā€œbells and whistlesā€ of the machine.

Oftentimes, these 6 exercises are enough of a challenge for them and, by learning and beginning to understand the movements, they start realizing why and how much their bodies need Pilates.

Here is the guide to learning Mat exercises. In this brand new video I give you step-by-step instructions of how to perform the first 6 exercises with precision and understanding.

The Mat routine and the Reformer routine complement each other. They are both valuable but the equipment is not portableā€”and the Mat routine is.Ā

Happy Hundred! :)
