The Attributes of Pilates
Symmetry and Asymmetry in Pilates
Much of the classical Pilates repertoire consists of movements where both arms or both legs move simultaneously in a symmetrical, bilateral manner.
Have you noticed that while performing exercises such as Leg Circles on the Reformer, Sidekicks on the Mat, or Leg Springs on the Cadillac, you can detect discrepancies in the strength and flexibility between your right and left legs?
This awareness is invaluable. By identifying these imbalances, you can be more intentional in addressing the weaknesses and tightness during your Pilates practice.
Use this insight to enhance your practice and achieve a more balanced and symmetrical body. Remember, understanding your body's unique needs is the key to unlocking the full benefits of Pilates.
Classical Pilates exercises improve the "mismatched" sides of our bodies. The vast resources include exercises where we move in a symmetrical, bilateral manner like in this video of the Elephant exercise.
Additionally, adding asymmetrical/ unilateral exercises will further develop your legs uniformly. You can improve your leg strength and your balance by practicing Chair exercises, such as "Straight Leg Press" or "Cross Over Pumping. "(see the video)
If you don't have access to the equipment, be sure that your at-home Pilates routine includes practicing Single Leg Circles and Sidekicks–two landmark Classical Pilates Mat exercises.
