Shining light on Pilates truths, honoring Joseph Pilates,
and supporting you in your Pilates journey.
Beware of Sport-Specific Pilates Advertisements
Joint mobility and muscle flexibility are components that not only improve the golf swing and prevent injury but also contribute to overall well-being. Having a full range of motion in the joints, along with strong and flexible muscles, forms the foundation of a fulfilling and active life for anyone. Classical Pilates improves both, and those who play golf or other sports benefit greatly from it.
Beware of activity- or sport-specific advertisements and so-called “experts” who claim that you must perform only certain exercises from the Pilates program to become a better golfer, tennis player, football player, swimmer, cyclist, runner, and so on.
In the case of a golfer, just because the golf swing involves pelvis and spine rotation doesn't mean one should focus solely or mostly on Pilates exercises that target those movements.
Practicing Classical Pilates in its entirety as a cohesive movement technique is what will ensure the desired results.
Joseph Pilates on his method of Contrology
"Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work. You will develop muscular power with corresponding endurance, ability to perform arduous duties, to play strenuous games, to walk, run, or travel for long distances without undue body fatigue or mental strain",
Return to Life by Joseph H. Pilates
My Two Cents
Let's go back to the example of golf: Proper spine alignment, the ability to rotate the trunk and pelvis, and the ability to move the arm efficiently without straining muscles are essential for executing a successful golf swing. The movement is complex, involving several muscles and joints working almost simultaneously, so any "warp" in the system can ruin the swing. A lack of a uniformly developed musculoskeletal system will ruin the swing.
Logically speaking, to improve your golf swing, you need to work on the whole body to balance muscular weakness and strength, as well as joint mobility, stability, and any deficiencies in these areas. Since the central objective of the Classical Pilates system is uniform development, the conclusion is clear:
Do Classical Pilates, be better at golf.
Do Classical Pilates, be better at life. 😊
