Good Posture Requires a Conscious Effort
Good posture requires a conscious effort, a blend of a strong body and a willing mind. It's a skill that must be practiced regularly.
We all know that good posture is neither achieved by wishful thinking nor solely by developing strong and flexible muscles. Our emotions affect how we carry ourselves:
- Happy đ: standing tall
- Sad đ: hunched over
It may even be possible to feel happy while slouching. However, when we're sad, tired, or somewhere in between, standing tall is challenging, and our state of mind manifests in poor posture.
We can learn and practice to control our emotions. We can learn and practice to control our bodies. We can train ourselves how to do this.
A strong core (center), a flexible spine, shoulders that stay down, and strong, flexible upper back muscles are needed to improve how we carry ourselves. Classical Pilates is structured to teach the necessary skills to balance musculoskeletal strength and weakness as well as flexibility and stiffness. It transforms our bodies into uniformly developed and efficient entities.
Joseph Pilates on his method of Contrology:
"Good posture can be successfully acquired only when the entire mechanism of the body is under perfect control. Graceful carriage follows as a matter of course. Just as a good smooth-running automobile engine is the result of proper parts correctly assembled so that it operates with minimum consumption of gasoline and oil with comparatively little wear, so too is the proper functioning of your body the direct result of the assembled Contrology exercises that produce harmonious structure we term physical fitness reflecting itself in a coordinated and balanced tripart unity of body, mind, and sprit.Â
