Shining light on Pilates truths, honoring Joseph Pilates,

and supporting you in your Pilates journey.

Movement is the Medicine That Yields Results

You already know from reading last week’s newsletter that movement is the medicine you need to repair the damage that you do to your body when you spend too much time sitting.

If you have not read it, here is the link to that newsletter.

The ailments that arise from prolonged sitting that I see most often can range from stiffness in the shoulders down to ankles to more severe issues such as inflammation of the piriformis, inflammation of the sciatic nerve, lower back pain and upper back pain.

Movement is a remedy.

At first, it makes you feel better physically– then it improves your mood.

But not just any movement is good, only the proper one. The movement that you carry out must use correct body mechanics.

Where can you learn how to move your body correctly?

Pilates, when practiced the way that Joseph Pilates intended, delivers the results you are looking for.

For best results though, "crack the code" of the fundamental concepts and principles of the method first. It will make all the choreography that Pilates is known for that much easier to master.

The concepts are best learned with mini-exercises such as Pelvic Rocking, Knee Folds, Knee Sways, Toe Taps, Leg Lifts, Arm Lifts, Arm Circles, and Head Curls.  So ask to learn the mini-exercises first, wherever you get your Pilates.  In the meantime, you can start here, with me by following my step-by-step instructions on how to learn the Head Curls.

Carefully study the movements that make the choreography of the Pilates exercises. When you learn, understand, and practice controlling your body to improve your body mechanics, you will improve the way you “walk, work and play,” and sit :)

Joseph Pilates laid the philosophy of his method out clearly in his book “Return to Life,” but that is a topic for my next Newsletter. So stay tuned. 😊
