Joseph Pilates' Method of Exercising:
Your Path to Healthy ShouldersĀ
Ā
Modern life seems to be putting a lot of stress on our shouldersāliterally speaking. Sedentary jobs, hours spent on smartphones, driving, and sitting during social occasions all contribute to discomfort, injuries, and chronic conditions in the shoulders, upper back, and neck. How do we escape these consequences without having to quit what we do for a living or for fun?
Pilates, of course!
Joseph Pilates' method treats the body as a whole while addressing each part separately. This is why the method is effective for treating a wide range of complaints and injuries from head to toe, including stiffness and pain of the spine (from neck to lower back), poor posture, leg and arm strength, muscle flexibility, hip and knee pain and stiffness, muscle spasms, hand and foot pain... the list goes on.
No wonder Pilates is so effective in helping many people, including those with sedentary jobs, with a variety of issues.
Pilates Mat exercises, as well as the larger apparatuses like the Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair, offer numerous opportunities to counteract the negative effects of sedentary jobs on the body. But did you know that Joseph Pilates also invented small equipment specifically to improve shoulder health?
The Ped-O-Pull, Half Barrel/Baby Arc, and Spine Corrector are among these tools.
Thatās why, when possible, take Pilates at a fully equipped studio where you can access everything Joseph Pilates invented. š

My Two CentsĀ
Shoulder issues can range from moderate to serious, and if you donāt want them to become serious, you must establish a routine that keeps your shoulders healthy and prevents injuries.
The best approach is to begin practicing classical Pilates with a knowledgeable teacher, either through private lessons, very small (3-4 participants) beginner-level group classes, or a well-structured classical Pilates fundamentals online course.
Until you figure out how and when to incorporate classical Pilates into your life, you can start by getting into the habit of standing up from your desk a few times during the workday and doing 1 or 2 exercises that stretch the muscles and mobilize the joints in the shoulders, neck, and upper back.
Remember, for movements to be effective, they donāt need to be complicated or take up a lot of your time.
Straightforward, simple movements done consistently yield positive results.
