Have You Thought About a Theme?

Are you ready to take your Pilates practice to the next level?

Even when you're working out on your own, finding a "theme" for each session can significantly enhance your practice. Since practicing Pilates involves performing the same exercises in the same order, having a theme allows you to zero in on one skill and carry that focus through all the movements in that particular session. Such an approach not only makes your workout more mentally cohesive but most of all, helps you control the outcome of each session.

How to Choose a Theme

Start by picking a theme for yourself when doing the first 10 exercises from the classical Pilates Mat repertoire. Here are a few theme ideas to get you started:

First Workout -

Breathing: Pay attention to your breath. For more information on how refer to my July 13th newsletter: all about the rupee of breathing. Here is the link:  https://www.harmoniouspilates.com/Newsletter.html

Second Workout - Engage your abdominals: Focus on scooping your abdominals using your exhale to maintain the contraction.

Third Workout - Activate your inner thigh. Work on engaging your inner thighs, noticing how this increases lower abdominal contraction.

Fourth Workout - Lower your shoulders. Keep your upper back muscles relaxed to keep the shoulders down. Avoid tension build-up.

By incorporating these themes into your Pilates practice, you’ll find that your workouts become more intentional, effective, and enjoyable. Remember, the key is to be focused, precise, and most of all consistent.

Classical Pilates exercises improve the "mismatched" sides of our bodies. The vast resources include exercises where we move in a symmetrical, bilateral manner like in this video of the Elephant exercise.

Next time you take a private lesson or join a group class, pay attention to the theme. Is it there? If it is, enjoy the structure and purpose that it gives to your workout.
