Are Your Pilates Lessons Note-Worthy?

by Joanna Telacka
May 20, 2026

Have you ever walked out of your Pilates lesson feeling like you uncovered a golden nugget of knowledge? Maybe it was a phrase your teacher used that resonated with you, imagery that helped you understand a new movement you were learning, or connect to muscles you did not know you had.

I certainly hope that such an experience is a part of all your Pilates sessions.:)

These moments of clarity are invaluable to your progress. As you continue to practice Pilates, the better you understand how your body works, the greater your return on investment. When I was learning and training, whether I took a private lesson or participated in a group class, there was always a phrase or an image that stuck in my mind that was worth remembering.

I found that writing it down was the best way to ensure that I could recall it and use it in my workouts, whether at home or in the studio. After all, what’s a Pilates lesson worth if you don’t learn something you can use the next time you practice?

So whether you prefer the feel of pen and paper or the convenience of your phone, take a moment after your session to jot down what resonated with you. Capturing the thoughts at these moments ensures they don’t fade away in the middle of the busyness of your day.

Over time, this collection of your notes will become a personal treasure trove, just like mine—a record of your Pilates journey, growth, and the wisdom you’ve gained along the way.

Your time is irreplaceable, so however much of it you spend on Pilates should bring you long-lasting, life-changing results.

So give it a try, look for the “golden nuggets” of information wherever you get your Pilates from:)

And once you begin collecting some of these “golden nuggets” of information, put them to use in your own practice.
Carry one idea, one correction, or one image through your workout and notice how differently the exercises begin to feel in your body.

To help you practice this way at home, I am attaching my Intermediate Mat tutorial below for inspiration. Pick one theme for the session, stay present in the movement, and see what new understanding you uncover along the way.

What Did Joseph Pilates Mean by “Elevates the Spirit”?
Last week, we talked about what happens when your mind becomes fully involved in moving your body. But Joseph Pilates didn't stop at body and mind.He included one more aspect. Spirit.He wrote that Contrology:“...invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.”But what does it mean to elevate the spirit? Here is what I have observed through years of teaching and what I experience in my own practice....
Pilates Is Physical. But Your Mind Has to Show Up Too.
There is a comment I still hear regularly:“Wow. There is so much to think about.”And every time I hear it, I think: “Yes. Now we are beginning to understand what practicing Pilates asks of us.” :)You most likely know by now that Pilates isn't supposed to be a workout you perform while your mind is somewhere else.Yes, your body may be the part that is moving, but your mind has work to do too. So...
Already Strong and Flexible, So WHAT’S Missing?
Joseph Pilates wrote in his book: “Ideally, our muscles should obey our will. Reasonably, our will should not be dominated by the reflex actions of our muscles.” Let’s think about what that means. Here are two thoughts I had: Being strong is not the same as knowing how to use your strength. Being flexible is not the same as knowing how to use your mobility. Strength and flexibility are physical...
