Behind the Scenes with Joseph Pilates Himself

by Joanna Telacka
Nov 06, 2025

What You and I call Pilates, he called Contrology.

He outlined the art and science of Contrology in his two books: “Return to Life” and “To Your Health”. He wrote them last year...

Just kidding! đŸ˜Š

He wrote them about 80 years ago, but I bet you wouldn't be able to tell. Why?

In “Return to Life” which he wrote in the 1940s he said:

“Since we are living in this Modern Age we must out of necessity devote more time and more thought to the important matter of acquiring physical fitness”                - Joseph H. Pilates.

Hm… It sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Mr.Pilates, ahead of his time, knew what you and I need in order to live a healthy, fulfilling life.

In his own words: “Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work. You will develop muscular power with corresponding endurance, ability to perform arduous duties, to play strenuous games, to walk, run, travel for long distances without undue body fatigue or mental strain”.

Seems like a reasonable and promising solution to what plagues us in “OUR” Modern Age, don’t you think?

How did he know that almost a century later our society will struggle with the same issues?

He really did not... but what he might have known was that the demands of living take a toll on the human body.

Neglected body ages faster. With age come injuries and complaints.

And the antidote to aging is movement. His movement.

A questions I get asked rather often:
“Why do we have to change positions so often?” We lie down, sit up, roll, kneel, stand, lie back down again. It must seem inefficient to those who ask, because they often suggest a quick solution: Why not remain in one position and finish all these movements before changing body orientation? Let me explain why. I'm hoping that by doing so, I will shine more light on why when we do Pilates, it ...
Your Intro to Pilates should go like this:
"Expect to listen to a lot of new information and move your body in an unfamiliar way." When you come to a Pilates studio for your first lesson, make sure that you come with a beginner's mind. Be ready to listen to a lot of new information and move your body in an unfamiliar way.  Your first Pilates lesson is as much of a way for you to find out what Pilates is and how it feels in yout body, as...
The Stretch You Know - And the Very Important Part You May Be Missing
You most likely know this stretch. The “quad stretch”. You grab your ankle, or your foot, your pant leg, you pull your foot towards your buttock, and you feel a stretch on the front of your thigh.  But this stretch can do so much more for your body if you know how to use all of what it offers.  Beside stretching your quadriceps, it can also stretch your hip flexors if you only ...
